The silence after the push
Push off the wall. Hard.
In the first second, the noise disappears. The conversations at the pool's edge, the lapping of the lane lines, the breathing of the other swimmers. Everything fades. Only the glide remains. That movement with no apparent effort where your body streaks beneath the surface, carried by the momentum of the push.
That's the underwater glide.
It lasts two seconds, sometimes three. It's the fastest movement in your swim. Faster than any arm movement. Faster than your most powerful kicks. The reason is purely physical: beneath the surface, you face only one force, drag. At the surface, you face two: drag and wave resistance. Underwater, you have a mechanical advantage that you lose the moment your head breaks the surface.
Each length contains at least two glides. One at the start, one at the turn. Over a 200-meter race in a 25-meter pool, that's eight glides. Eight chances to gain or lose tenths without taking a single arm stroke. In competition, those tenths often decide the race.
The underwater glide is not dead time between two swimming phases. It's a technical gesture in its own right. The one that demands the most rigor, and forgives the least.

Anatomy of the position
Your goal underwater is simple to state, hard to execute: offer the smallest possible frontal surface while maintaining perfect alignment.
The arms. Extended in front of you, one over the other, biceps pressed against the ears. The hands overlap, palms toward the bottom. The space between your arms and your head must be zero. The slightest gap creates a resistance front that slows you down.
The head. In the exact axis of the spine. The gaze goes toward the bottom of the pool, slightly forward. Raising the eyes, even by a few degrees, is enough to break the alignment and make the pelvis rise. The neck stays in the natural extension of the back, relaxed.
The trunk. Braced. Abs engaged, not locked. The difference matters. The pelvis stays neutral: neither arched toward the bottom, nor lifted toward the surface. Your body forms a single continuous line, from fingers to toes.
The legs. Together, active but not rigid. The ankles are extended, the feet pointed. They complete the hydrodynamic shape. Relaxed feet dragging in the wake increase drag measurably.
The frequent errors. The most common: the pelvis that sags. Fatigue, lack of core engagement, or simply habit produce a break at the hips. You don't always feel it. But it slows you on every glide.
The other trap: the arms that open too early, before the momentum of the push has decelerated. You launch your first arm movement while you're still faster in pure glide. You brake in order to restart.

The dolphin kicks: the invisible whip
The speed of the push decreases fast. After a meter, sometimes two, propulsion must be relaunched. That's the role of the dolphin kicks, executed in the streamline position.
The movement is born from the sternum. Not the knees. Not the hips. From the upper torso, like a wave propagating downward. The shoulders initiate a slight oscillation. The torso transmits. The hips amplify. The legs whip. It's the final acceleration, the one that propels. The knees bend barely, just enough for the feet to snap with amplitude.
The classic trap: bending the knees as if for a flutter kick. The dolphin kick is not a flutter. It's a continuous, fluid wave, without a break. A whip, not a piston.
The frequency depends on the goal. In a sprint, the kicks are fast, powerful, short, two or three at full intensity. In middle distance, they slow: three to four broad, controlled kicks that relaunch without exhausting. In distance, economy prevails: one or two are enough, just enough to maintain speed before the breakout.
The timing of initiation is critical. Starting too early, before the glide speed has decelerated, amounts to braking. Your body undulates while it would streak faster in a static position. Waiting too long lets the speed collapse. The right moment lies between the two: when you feel the momentum weaken, but before it dies out.
When to break out
The rule is mechanical: as long as your underwater speed exceeds your surface swimming speed, stay underwater.
World Aquatics regulations require emergence before 15 meters. But the technical question is not "how long can I stay?", it's "at what moment do I lose the advantage?"
For most trained swimmers, the tipping point lies between 5 and 10 meters. Elites push it to 12-15 meters thanks to an impeccable position and dolphin kicks of formidable efficiency.
Underwater, no reliable clock, no clear visual marker. You have to learn to read your sensations. The resistance that increases against your face. The propulsion that loses efficiency. The need for oxygen that rises. These signals converge toward a single instant, the one when you must break out, initiate the transition, launch the first arm movement without breaking the speed acquired.

Building your glide: 4 levels
Level 1: The line
Goal: Feel and memorize the hydrodynamic position.
- Push off the wall, arms in streamline, no dolphin kick
- Glide as far as possible while maintaining strict alignment
- Mentally note the distance reached
- Repeat 5 times, aim to gain 10 to 20 cm each pass
What you're working on: Static core bracing, hand placement, awareness of the body line. It's the foundation. Without it, nothing else holds.
Level 2: The controlled dolphin kick
Goal: Add propulsion without losing alignment.
- Same push off the wall, same position
- Add 3 slow, broad dolphin kicks
- Focus on initiation from the sternum, the pelvis must not break
- Repeat 8 times
What you're working on: Trunk-leg coordination, the fluidity of the wave, control of amplitude. If the movement jerks, slow down further.
Level 3: The transition
Goal: Break out to the surface without losing speed.
- Push + 3 to 5 dolphin kicks
- Transition to your first swimming stroke
- The arm leaves the water in the exact continuity of the glide, no abrupt tearing, a fluid ascent
- Repeat 10 times
What you're working on: Breakout timing. Conservation of speed. The glide-to-swim link, which is often the weak link.
Level 4: The glide under fatigue
Goal: Maintain rigor when the body gives out.
- After an intensive set (8×50m at high intensity, for example), immediately link 6 complete glides with transition
- Your body is tired, your abs let go, your position degrades
- Maintain strict alignment despite everything
What you're working on: Discipline in competition. Over a 200-meter race, the last glides are the ones that degrade the most, and the ones where the clock is decided.
Strategy by distance
Sprint (50m). Maximum push. Two to three dolphin kicks at full power. Fast breakout, around 7-8 meters. The goal: reach maximum surface speed as fast as possible, without wasting the initial propulsion.
Middle distance (100-200m). Powerful but measured push. Four to five sustained dolphin kicks. Breakout around 10-12 meters. The turn becomes strategic, it's often there that gaps open up, because fatigue tempts you to rush the glide.
Distance (400m and up). Controlled push, energy economy. Two to three dolphin kicks are enough. Breakout as early as 6-8 meters to limit the oxygen debt. Consistency prevails over distance: better regular glides over thirty-two lengths than one spectacular glide followed by fifteen mediocre ones.
The invisible movement
The glide can't be seen from the stands. It plays out beneath the surface, in the silence. That's perhaps why it's so often neglected in training, and so decisive in a race.
Swimmers who perform share one thing in common: their glides are identical from the first length to the last. Same position. Same amplitude. Same rigor. The discipline of the invisible gesture separates those who swim well from those who perform.
It's also the moment when your equipment matters most, or rather, the moment when it must matter least. Underwater, in the streamline position, the slightest fold, the slightest excess thickness, the slightest resistance added by the fabric is paid for in drag.
